Exhibition
The design of typefaces has been and still is largely dominated by typographers and type foundries from Western Europe. Central and Eastern Europe, and post-communist countries, also have rich traditions in calligraphy and typography. However, it is rare to see projects from typographers and designers from Armenia, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Greece, Georgia, Poland, Romania, Turkey, and Ukraine all in one place.
This geographic area is particularly interesting because it combines two different, yet related, traditions: the Latin alphabet and the Cyrillic-based alphabet. This is the first attempt to showcase the work of typographers from this part of Europe, aiming to reflect on what connects us and what divides us. Additionally, the exhibition will take us to Southern Europe, providing an opportunity to show examples of Greek alphabet typefaces.
As part of the Eastern European Design Festival, we want to introduce a wider audience to typographic posters that are a collection of typographic characteristics from Central and Eastern Europe. An important aspect of the exhibition is to highlight the linguistic uniqueness of each country by showcasing typographic regionalisms, such as diacritical marks and variations of Cyrillic alphabets.
